Paul Brink

Paul has always been drawn to the legal field because he wants to do work that makes a positive difference in people’s lives and in the community. Originally from rural Kansas, Paul attended Wichita State University as an undergraduate, earning degrees in both Economics and Political Science. Paul and his spouse Ashley then spent time in Colorado where Paul worked in advocacy and in constituent services for elected officials before returning to Kansas to attend Washburn Law School.

As a law student, Paul had the opportunity to represent actual clients through the Washburn Law Clinic, which serves individuals unable to afford to hire an attorney. This work included representing a client through a jury trial for which he secured an acquittal, along with positive outcomes for every client represented. In that capacity, Paul was honored with the Outstanding Clinical Team Award from the Clinical Legal Education Association.

Paul completed internships with the Kansas Supreme Court, the Public Defenders at the Kansas Board of Indigent Defense Services including on the Death Penalty Defense Unit, and a Wichita-based law firm working in Family Law. Paul also handled four separate Criminal Appeals through a partnership with Washburn Law and the Kansas Appellate Defender’s office. Paul served as a staff writer and on the editorial board of the Washburn Law Journal and wrote an academic research article on the Fifth Amendment that was selected for publication in the Law Journal. After graduating from Washburn Law, Paul moved to Minnesota and started his legal career with Birkholz Law in 2025.

Since starting his professional practice, Paul has been active in pursuing additional specialized training by attending the Minnesota Society for Criminal Justice annual DWI seminar, the Minnesota Family Law Institute, as well as various other trainings and continuing education opportunities. Paul has broadened his experience in Criminal Defense through multiple contracts as a Public Defender and maintains an active private practice in Criminal Defense, Family Law and Appellate Advocacy. Paul has represented clients in both Criminal Defense and Family Law matters from case initiation through trial and has briefed and argued cases at the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Paul is committed to protecting his clients’ best interests, including taking every step to protect their rights and their families. He is analytical and adaptable, tailoring his approach in each case to the precise strategy that will be most effective under the circumstances. Paul is also highly compassionate and truly cares about helping his clients, many of whom are experiencing or have experienced one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

Paul enjoys traveling, live music and camping in various Minnesota State Parks. When he has a free moment, Paul prefers to spend time with friends and family, including his spouse Ashley and their three wonderful pets Yoshi, Willow and Astrid.
